Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”). Galatians 3:13

Jesus took the curse of the broken law, which justly should have come upon us, so that we might inherit the blessings His obedience deserved. He poured out His blood to pay the price to see us set free.

As the reality of our redemption dawns on us, it births a militancy in our spirits. We begin to stand against all the works of darkness and no longer passively accept them as God’s “sovereign will.” We start to resist the devil, and he flees from us:

Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. James 4:7

But what should we resist?

Our traditions have obscured the Word, and many are unclear on what the Bible calls a curse and what the Bible calls a blessing.

 SO WHAT IS THE CURSE?

The Law of Moses clearly outlined the curses that would come for disobedience to its precepts  in Deuteronomy 28:

  • Failure and unfruitfulness in life (v. 16–20; 38–40)
  • Lack (v. 47–48)
  • All forms of sickness (v. 21–27; 59–61)
  • Defeat before your enemies (v. 25)
  • Marriage and family problems (v. 32, 54, 56)
  • Oppression (v. 65–67)
  • Mental problems and fear (v. 56–57)

Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us.

Jesus took the curse we deserved upon Himself on the cross in order that we might walk in freedom and in the reality of redemption. He freely gives us the blessing His obedience deserved.

Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, whom He has redeemed from the hand of the enemy. Psalm 107:2

Praise the Lord that we are free from these curses! I will leave you with one of Joe McIntyre’s very favorite gospel songs which happens to be based on Deuteronomy 28 (the blessing part):

Establishing Our Hearts in the Grace of God contains seven “foundation stones” from God’s Word that establish the believer in the Gospel of grace, revealing the heart of the Father towards his children.
